Science in the Glorious Quran: COSMOLOGY
The Universe According to the Bible
Some people have claimed that the Qur’an was copied from the Bible. However, this is definitely impossible because unlike the Qur’an, the Bible depicts the universe in a way which is far away from scientific facts as summarized below:
- God created the heaven, the earth and light on Day One and created the Sun on Day Four.
“In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. …. And God said, “Let there be light,” …. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”- the first day … God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night…. the fourth day.” (Genesis, 1: 1-19)
- The sky is like a tent:
“Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah, 40:22).
- During creation God made a vault (sky) which separates the water above from the water below:
“So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it” (Genesis, 1:7).
- The sky is spread over the earth like a hard a mirror of cast bronze:
“Can you join him in spreading out the skies, hard as a mirror of cast bronze?” (Job, 37:18).
- The heaven is held up by pillars:
“The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke” (Job, 26:11).
- The sun moves around the earth:
“It (the Sun) rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth” (Psalm, 19:6).
- God laid foundations for Earth, which implies that it is fixed on the foundations and does not move.
“He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved” (Psalm, 104:5).
- The whole world can be seen from a high mountain which implies that the Earth is flat.
“Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour” (Matthew, 4:8).
The flat Earth was a popular imagination in the 19th and 20th centuries until it was declined in the 1990s. The founder and president of the International Flat Earth Society in the United States was Charles K. Johnson (1924 – 2001).
According to the Biblical concept of the flat Earth:
1- It does not move.
“He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved” (Psalm, 104:5).
2- It has four corners.
“This is what the Sovereign LORD says to the land of Israel: “‘The end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land!” (Ezekiel 7:2).
3- Four angels are standing on the corners of the Earth.
“After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth” (Revelations, 7: 1).
