IN EGYPT MP PROPOSES TO BAN NIQAB
In Egypt, the deputy and journalist Farida Shabushi spoke about her plans to submit to parliament for discussion a bill banning the wearing of the niqab and criminalizing it.
In a comment to Al-Watan newspaper, she stated that “the niqab is a form of disguise, and there have been many occasions when it has been used by criminals to hide their faces and identity in an attack.”
Niqab has already been banned in Egypt.
In particular, in 2009, Sheikh Muhammad Said Tantawi banned him from classes and in dormitories of Al-Azhar University.
The niqab was later banned during examinations at Cairo University.
However, in 2012, the Minister of Education said that it was unfair to exclude girls in niqab from exams, and it would be much better if they could pass the exams after university staff verified their identity.
In 2018, a member of the Egyptian House of Representatives, Gada Alami, had already proposed banning the wearing of the niqab in public places and introducing a fine for violating this law, but her initiative was rejected.
