Rabat became the cultural capital of the islamic world in 2022
The Islamic Education, Science and Culture Organization has declared the Moroccan capital Rabat the “Cultural Capital of the Islamic World 2022”, according to the GZT website.
The Islamic Organization for Education, Science and Culture ( ISESCO ) operates under the auspices of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and deals with education, science, culture and communication in Islamic countries to support and strengthen relations between member states.
The fact that Rabat will become the “Cultural Capital of the Islamic World 2022″ was announced at a joint press conference by Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Muhammad al-Mahdi Binsaid and ISESCO Director General Dr. Salim ibn Muhammad al-Malik in Rabat.
Rabat was founded in the 12th century as a military settlement and was originally called Ribat el-Fath, which means “Fortress of Victory” in Arabic. In 1146, the Almohad ruler Abd al-Mumin turned Rabat into a full-scale fortress to use as a launching point for attacks on Iberia. The city flourished during the time of Caliph Yakub al-Mansur (1160-1199), who moved the capital of his empire here. During his reign, such historical monuments of the city as the walls of Rabat, a fortress were builtKasbah Udaya. After him, a period of decline began. The influx of Moriscos, which were expelled from Spain in the early 17th century, contributed to the growth of the city. In 1912, the French administration moved the capital here from Fez. After the country gained independence in 1955, King Muhammad V decided not to change this state of affairs. Rabat was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.
Director General Salim ibn Muhammad al-Malik announced that ISESCO and the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communications will hold a number of joint activities under the World Islamic Capital of Culture 2022 project. He also spoke about the care that the King of Morocco Muhammad VI shows to historical monuments in order to preserve the history and identity of the country. “We discussed aspects of joint cooperation between the parties. The Right Honorable King of Morocco has approved the award of the title of “Cultural Capital of the Islamic World 2022” to Rabat, which made us very happy, “said ISESCO Director General.
Within the framework of the project “Cultural Capital of the Islamic World”, initiated by ISESCO in 2005, various cultural events are held in cities that have been awarded this name.
