What awaits the institution of the family in Turkey?
According to a poll conducted in Turkey, 79.6% believed that husbands should support ex-wives, and Turkish families also prefer daughters over sons, according to the GZT website.
The Turkish sociological agency Areda Survey and a private institute conducted a study on the state of the institution of the family in Turkey. It covered topics such as the status of marriage and nikah, children, caring for the elderly, threats to the family, family values, working women, the economic situation of the family , family law, domestic violence and divorce, the impact of means of communication on the family, and epidemics.
The study was conducted by the method of online poll (CAWI) in 26 provinces, in total, more than 2,400 people took part in it. Some of the results were very interesting.
The institution of the family is weakening in Turkey
As follows from the results, the institution of the family in Turkey is currently weakening, the reason for which is the spread of social networks and online communication, the ideology of consumption, the weakening of traditional values and connections between people.
As follows from the survey, the share of those who consider the institution of the family more or less strong is 35.6%, 37.1% called it weak, and 11.8% said that the family was destroyed. The opinion that the institution of the family has practically collapsed was expressed more by people with a low level of education and income.
Most believe that men should support ex-wives
The respondents were asked whether a man should pay support to his ex-wife after a divorce. 20.4% answered that a man should not pay anything, 79.6% thought that he should.
Turkish families want a girl
To the question: “If you could have only one child, who would you prefer – a boy or a girl?”, 56.3% of the respondents answered that they would like a girl. The share of those who wanted a boy in such a situation was 43.7%.
According to the research results, women prefer daughters much more often than men. The share of those who gave preference to girls was 68.8% for women and 43.7% for men. Also, the percentage of those who chose a daughter is higher among the elderly compared to young people and among those who have higher education compared to those who have a low level of education. Among those who did not go to school, 32.9% gave preference to girls, while among those who had higher education this indicator was up to 61.8%.
When do they need a family?
The study also touched upon the issue of solidarity between family members and their appeal to each other for help. To the question “When do you contact someone close to your family members?” 70.8% of the respondents answered that in difficult situations, and 59.6% – when money is needed.
During the study, a question was also asked about who provides the respondents with assistance in case of material difficulties. To the question “Who do you turn to in the first place when you need money?” 59.6% answered that to close family members, 20.5% – to the bank, 10% said they were asking for help from friends, 2.3% – to government agencies. According to the results of the study, it was noted that with an increase in the level of education, the tendency to turn to one of the family members in difficult situations decreases; university graduates tend to seek help from government agencies or banks.
