A new community fridge, essentially serving as a food bank, has been launched at the JTI Southfield Square Masjid in Bradford’s Manningham area to provide vital support for those in need.
Stocked with essentials such as milk, bread, butter, cereals, biscuits, fruit, vegetables, and tinned goods, the fridge is open every Sunday from 11am to 1pm, Telegraph & Argus reported.
Volunteers worked to transform a space in the mosque’s basement into a functional and welcoming community fridge.
Syed Ahsan Shah, a director at the mosque, emphasised the importance of the initiative.
“At JTI, we strive to serve the community at large as the message of our founder and pioneer, Pir Syed Maroof, who recently passed away in the summer, was to unify all communities. Having a food bank in the centre of Manningham will be a life-saver during turbulent times.”
The project is overseen by Mohammed Wasim, who highlighted its inclusivity.
“The JTI community fridge is open to all, regardless of background. We hope the community fridge will serve as a lifeline for many, and we aim to ensure nobody in the area sleeps hungry,” he said.
This initiative comes at a crucial time as rising living costs continue to affect households across the region.
The mosque invites donations and support from the wider community to keep the fridge stocked and running effectively.
