JERSEY CITY PROMOTES RAMY EID TO CHIF JUDGE OF MUNICIPAL COURT
Ramy Eid, the first Egyptian-American named to the Jersey City municipal court bench seven years ago, has been promoted to chief judge of the city’s municipal court, Mayor Steve Fulop announced.
Eid will fill the position that opened when Chief Municipal Judge Carlos Abad was appointed to serve on the Hudson County Superior Court. Eid must first be approved by the Jersey City City Council on April 10, 2021.
The appointment of Eid, who is Muslim, comes on the same day that President Joe Biden announced the historic appointment of the first Muslim as a federal district judge.
“I’m extremely honored and excited to be appointed chief judge,” Eid said. “I look forward to building upon our successful operations as one of the most dynamic courts in the state, with many specialty courts handling complex issues, including mental health, domestic violence, and community court.”
The Jersey City municipal court has one of the largest case dockets in the state city officials said.
“I have no doubt that Judge Eid’s tenacity and leadership skills will continue to lead our court system with policies outlined around fairness and equality,” Fulop said.
As a municipal court judge, Eid assisted with the development and implementation of the Jersey City Community Court, which focuses on quality of life offenses utilizing community service as an alternative to incarceration and fines while linking offenders with service providers to improve both individual and community outcomes.
Eid also has been involved in cases regarding compliance in quality of life measures and similar code violations to ensure the city’s policies to safeguard residents are upheld, officials said.
