Pro-Palestinian protesters rally in Washington, demand sanctions on Israel
Large pro-Palestinian crowds gathered in Washington on Saturday to protest recent Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and called for sanctions on Israel.
More than 100 organizations sponsored the National March for Palestine and called for sanctions on Israel.
Protesters carried signs, waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans at the base of the Lincoln Memorial.
Tensions remain high in the region despite a ceasefire that took effect on May 21 between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The ceasefire, mediated by Egypt, ended 11 days of fighting, during which the Israeli military pounded Gaza with airstrikes which it said were a response to rockets fired at Israel by Palestinian militants.
