Bordesley Green Mosque unveil plans to build a women’s centre
The Al – Hijrah Masjid in Bordesley Green is planning to build a women’s centre on top of the existing building.
The mosque has had a temporary roof for the past six years – so management plan to build a third storey creating a ‘safe space’ for the Muslim women of Bordesley Green.
The women’s centre will have a rooftop garden, audio-visual facility and conference rooms. Women will also be able to use it for learning, fundraising events and meetings.
It will take up to two to three years for completion with building work set to in around eight weeks.
The acting chairman of the mosque Nasir Mahmood told BirminghamLive: “The area is quite impoverished so it needs a lot of educational development and the building will be used for courses, lectures and conferences.
“We have a lot of ethnic minorities within the area and communities of different nationalities. Therefore by supporting and empowering the women in the community we hope they can nurture and educate others to keep them away from alcohol, drugs and knife crimes.” he said.
