TALIBAN STAND UP FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS
Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban * have officially reaffirmed their commitment to women’s rights.
According to the decree of the Taliban leader Haybatullah Akhundzada, a woman, being a “noble and free person”, cannot be anyone’s property.
The document emphasizes that the forced marriage of a girl is a crime. The decree also recognizes the illegal local tradition of giving up the fair sex in exchange for ending the dispute and enmity. Separately, the document speaks about the rights of widows, which, in accordance with the decree, no one has the right to marry forcibly.
Such women must independently decide whether they should remarry or not. In addition, the decree reserves for widows the right to inherit and a fixed share in the property of the husband, children, father and other relatives. The document also touches upon the topic of polygamy. Thus, men who have several wives must “grant rights” to each of them according to the Sharia.
Corresponding directives are already being received in the country’s mosques, whose staff in sermons must now mention the inadmissibility of violating women’s rights, noting that for such acts the perpetrators will incur the wrath of the Almighty.
