Toledo Man Honored as One of 100 Notable American Muslims

In recognition of his effort to serve the country, a prominent American Muslim surgeon has been honored as one of 100 notable American Muslims on the list made by Long Island’s Interfaith Institute.

The Islamic center named Dr. S. Amjad Hussain, a University of Toledo professor emeritus in the College of Medicine and UT’s College of Arts and Letters, in the list’s health care category.

“I’m overwhelmed,’ Dr. Hussain said of the recognition, Toledo Blade reported.

Fluent in five languages, Dr. Hussain, 85, is a cardiothoracic surgeon, educator, author, and world traveler.

He also invented the pleuroperitoneal shunt and a special endotracheal tube used in surgery.

“He’s a renaissance man… He clearly stood out,” said Dr. Faroque Khan, one of the founding members of the Islamic Center of Long Island who also helped author the list.

“He invented a whole bunch of things in the surgical field,” Dr. Khan said.

“Besides his professional achievements… he’s a writer for the Toledo paper, and his columns about contemporary issues are always insightful and on the mark. He [also] has written so many books about different aspects [of life]. For example, he explored the Indus River on a journey from its top to bottom.”

Helping Community

Dr. Khan added that Dr. Hussain and the rest in the category were picked from about 10,000 Muslim physicians in the nation for making impact in medicine and beyond.

“To me, the best thing any community can do is to understand the components of that society, that community,” Dr. Hussain said.

“And so I take a little bit of pride in being able to [help it] do that.”

Earlier this year, Time magazine named several Muslim leaders and icons in its 2022 list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

Also in 2020, Time named Bilkis, an 82- year-old Indian Muslim woman from New Delhi, as one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2020.
